Almond Butter Smoothie: A Superfood Smoothie Even Skeptics Love

Almond Butter Smoothie for Easy Digestion and Maximum Nutrition.

When I was sick, this smoothie was one of the only things I could stomach. I could barely keep food down, but I craved the cold, creamy texture and the comfort of something mildly sweet. The best part? It’s packed with hidden superfoods, but you’d never know it—the rich chocolatey almond butter flavor makes it taste more like dessert than a health drink.

I’ve never been a picky eater, but during chemo, everything tasted off—nothing sounded appealing. Except this. It became my go-to, not just for the taste but because it was easy on my stomach as a pre-digested food. Blending helps break down fibers, making nutrients easier to absorb—which was a lifesaver when my digestion felt sluggish and food just wasn’t sitting right. On top of that, it was packed with nutrients and gave me a much-needed nutrient boost when I needed it most.

This Almond Butter Smoothie is:

Easy to Digest – Blending breaks down fibers, making nutrients easier to absorb—perfect for sluggish digestion or nausea.

Nutrient-Packed – Loaded with healthy fats, protein, and superfoods to provide essential nourishment and sustained energy.

Soothing & Hydrating – The cold, creamy texture helps with inflammation, mouth sores, and hydration when your body needs it most.

Delicious & Comforting – Tastes like dessert with a rich chocolatey almond butter flavor—one of the few foods that might actually sound good.

A Note on Kefir

This smoothie includes kefir, which adds a slight tang that pairs beautifully with the richness of cacao and almond butter. I’m a big proponent of kefir, especially during antibiotic use—it’s packed with probiotics that help restore gut health.

However, kefir isn’t for everyone. If you’re dealing with active SIBO or IMO, fermented foods can sometimes exacerbate symptoms rather than help. If that’s the case, simply swap it out for your milk of choice—almond, coconut, raw, or whatever works best for you.

No matter how you tweak it, this smoothie is a nourishing, gut-friendly option that’s both satisfying and packed with benefits.

Almond Butter Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C kefir (or substitute milk)

  • 1/2 frozen banana

  • 1 T almond butter

  • 1 t cacao powder

  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (Sun Warrior is what I use for this)

  • 1 t each: hemp seed, chia seed, flax seed

  • 1 t pure synergy green powder (this and vitamineral green are my favorite green powders)

  • pinch of pink himalyan salt

  • 1 C water (or milk of choice if needing more calories)

  • handful of ice

  • optional: cacao nibs

Directions

  • Blend all ingredients (except ice) until smooth.

  • Add a couple of handfuls of ice and blend again until creamy.

  • Optional: Toss in cacao nibs and pulse a few times for added texture.

Make it Work for You

Whether you’re recovering from illness, dealing with digestive issues, or just looking for an easy, nutrient-packed option, this smoothie delivers. It’s gentle on the gut, loaded with superfoods, and actually tastes good—a rare combo when your body is struggling to tolerate food.

The best part? It’s flexible! Need extra calories? Use a full-fat milk. Avoiding kefir? Swap it for yogurt or milk. Hate chia seeds? Leave them out! No matter how you tweak it, this smoothie is designed to nourish, support digestion, and give you the energy boost you need—without the discomfort.
